A Unique Living Solution
In 1993, faced with the challenge of finding a new home after her house was destroyed, Jo Ann Ussery explored unconventional housing options. Inspired by her brother-in-law’s suggestion, she embarked on a remarkable journey to transform a decommissioned Boeing 727 into her dream home.
An Innovative Idea
Ussery’s brother-in-law located a retired Boeing 727 slated for dismantling, sparking her imagination. She seized the opportunity, purchasing the entire plane, including shipping costs, for a mere $2,000.
Transforming the Boeing 727
Investing less than $30,000 in refurbishing the aircraft, Ussery embarked on a comprehensive renovation project. Positioning the plane overlooking a nearby lake, she commenced work on the interior, preserving certain original features while upgrading insulation and flooring.
The Luxurious Interior
Inside the Boeing 727, Ussery created a stunning living space, complete with three bedrooms, a living area, kitchen, and even a laundry room. The cockpit was ingeniously transformed into a luxurious master bathroom, evoking a sense of floating midair.
A Museum in the Sky
After enjoying her unique abode for several years, Ussery decided to share its splendor with the world by converting it into a museum. However, tragedy struck during transportation, leading to severe damage to the aircraft.
A Lasting Legacy
Despite the unfortunate end to her Boeing 727’s journey, Ussery’s transformation remains a testament to creativity and resilience. Her innovative approach to repurposing an aircraft captured the imagination of many, leaving behind a legacy of ingenuity and inspiration.
