Barry Keoghan and Joaquin Phoenix, both celebrated for their portrayals of DC’s Joker, crossed paths at the recent Golden Globe Awards, marking a unique convergence of two distinct Joker incarnations.
Keoghan and Phoenix each brought the Joker to life in separate DC films released within a few years of each other: Phoenix in 2019’s “Joker” and Keoghan in 2022’s “The Batman.” Despite their shared portrayal of the iconic villain, it’s essential to recognize that their interpretations belong to entirely different cinematic universes.
Taking to Instagram, Keoghan shared two photos of himself alongside Phoenix from the Golden Globes, playfully captioning the post with “Just havin’ a laugh [Clown Face].”
Phoenix is set to reprise his role as Joker in the upcoming sequel to the 2019 film, titled “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Joining him will be Lady Gaga, making her debut as Harley Quinn, a role previously portrayed by Margot Robbie in a separate DC universe franchise.
Although Keoghan has expressed interest in returning as Joker in future installments of the Robert Pattinson-led Batman universe, no official announcement has been made regarding his reprisal. Interestingly, Keoghan originally auditioned for the role of The Riddler in “The Batman” but eventually caught the eye of the casting team, leading to his consideration for the role of Joker.
Fans couldn’t help but share their excitement and speculation about the encounter, with some humorously suggesting scenarios akin to the Spider-Verse or “Joker: No Way Home.”
“Joker: Folie à Deux” is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024, while “The Batman Part II” is scheduled for release on October 3, 2025.
