The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot series is still in the works, according to producer Dolly Parton, offering hope to fans eagerly awaiting its revival.
Parton, who co-produced all seven seasons of Buffy and its spinoff Angel through Sandollar Television, confirmed in an interview with Business Insider that the reboot series is still in development. While she didn’t share specific details, Parton assured that the project has not been abandoned and remains on the agenda for future revamping.
Originally announced in 2018, the reboot series was set to feature a Black lead and a diverse cast, with original creator Joss Whedon executive producing and writing alongside Monica Owusu-Breen. However, the project was put on indefinite pause in August 2022, leaving fans in the dark about its progress. Parton’s update brings renewed excitement for Buffy the Vampire Slayer enthusiasts.
The television series, based on the 1992 film, aired on The WB/UPN from 1997 to 2003, spanning seven seasons and earning critical acclaim and a devoted following. Led by Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, the show depicted a high school cheerleader chosen to combat supernatural forces alongside a memorable ensemble cast.
While details about the reboot’s release date are still pending, fans can revisit the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, currently available for streaming on Hulu.
