Charles Band, a B-movie veteran, acknowledges that his latest project, “Barbenheimer,” is indeed a shameless attempt to capitalize on the success of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” However, he sees it as a chance to blend the contrasting themes of these films and inject some dark humor.
“Barbenheimer” follows Dr. Bambi J Barbenheimer, a brilliant scientist doll living in Dolltopia, who becomes enraged by the mistreatment of dolls by human children and decides to take action by building a giant nuclear bomb. Band admits the premise is silly but believes it offers a much-needed dose of humor in a sea of dark and depressing films.
The idea for “Barbenheimer” came from Band’s biographer, Adam Felber, and swiftly evolved into a script with the help of Brian Wecht, known for his musical comedy work. Despite its modest budget, the project has generated significant interest, with fans eagerly awaiting its release and even requesting merchandise. Band’s Full Moon company is already developing dolls inspired by the film, promising a quirky and unconventional addition to the world of cinema.
