A new, official look at George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa has arrived. Set to premiere in May 2024, the upcoming post-apocalyptic epic will focus on the origins of Charlize Theron’s Fury Road character, only this time she will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy. The cast of the movie also includes Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, and Daniel Webber, alongside returning Fury Road cast members Nathan Jones as Rictus Erectus and Angus Sampson as The Organic Mechanic.
During CCXP’s panel on the Furiosa movie, the official trailer was unveiled before it was released online via Warner Bros. The trailer promises an action-packed epic as it introduces Taylor-Joy’s young Furiosa, who has not yet shorn her long, flowing hair at the beginning of the movie (though the final shot reveals she does so over the course of the story). Her quest to find her way home sees her squaring off against an unrecognizable Chris Hemsworth as the villain Dementus as well as attempting to protect the life of a child.
This is the first trailer for Furiosa, so it keeps many major plot details under wraps beyond revealing a first look at most of the cast in character. However, after onscreen text introduces the fact that the movie takes place 45 years after the fall of civilization, the trailer hints at many important developments in Furiosa’s early life. This includes a promise she makes to return home at all costs, though she does not accomplish this goal until the events of Fury Road.
It seems that a large part of the plot will involve Furiosa protecting the life of a child. The young character is seemingly introduced as a prize for winning a race, and is later seen being driven away by Furiosa. This shows that the protective instincts that the character later displays when trying to rescue the wives of Hugh Keays-Byrne’s Fury Road villain Immortan Joe are part of her character much earlier than the events of that movie.
The Furiosa trailer has also offered a glimpse at Chris Hemsworth’s new villain, though the exact nature of the threat he poses is as yet unknown. Also on hand is a younger Immortan Joe, though he still requires the use of the breathing apparatus he wears in Fury Road. All in all, the movie looks to be a holistic continuation of the Mad Max universe as laid out in the previous movie, though it seems that plenty of high-octane twists and turns will abound.
