Scottish actor Gerard Butler is set to reprise his role as Stoick in Universal Pictures’ live-action adaptation of DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon.” According to Deadline, Butler will return to the franchise alongside Mason Thames and Nico Parker, who will portray Hiccup and Astrid, respectively.
Dean DeBlois, the director, writer, and producer of the original trilogy, is leading the project. The film is scheduled for release on June 13, 2025, with further casting announcements and plot details yet to be revealed.
The animated trilogy, which began in 2010, captivated audiences worldwide, following the adventures of teen Viking Hiccup and his bond with the dragon Toothless. Butler voiced Stoick, Hiccup’s father, throughout the series, which grossed over $1.6 billion globally and earned four Academy Award nominations.
Butler’s return to the franchise pays homage to the beloved series, based on the best-selling books by Cressida Cowell. His diverse career, highlighted by action-packed performances in franchises like “Olympus Has Fallen” and “300,” continues to thrive in Hollywood. Additionally, Butler will reprise his role as Nick O’Brien in the upcoming sequel “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” slated for release in 2024.
