Hero teacher jumped into action bravely ‘disarmed teen girl with knife’

Hero Teacher Disarms Teenager in Stabbing Incident at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman

In a shocking incident at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman (Amman Valley School) in Carmarthenshire, two teachers and a student were injured following a stabbing, and a teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Brave Intervention by Teacher

Darrel Campbell, the Head of Year 11, emerged as a hero by disarming the teenage girl during the morning break in the playground. Witnesses reported that Mr. Campbell intervened amid chaos and managed to wrestle the butterfly knife from the girl, detaining her until police arrived.

Details of the Incident

According to Dyfed-Powys Police, the teenage girl was arrested after three individuals – two teachers and a pupil – were taken to the hospital with stab wounds. The incident led to a four-hour “Code Red” lockdown, during which students had to stay isolated with staff and were not allowed to use their phones or look out of windows.

Injured Individuals and Their Recovery

Deputy Headteacher Fiona Elias and teacher Liz Hopkin were named as the teachers injured in the attack. Fiona Elias, 48, sustained superficial injuries to her hand and informed her father, John Owen, about her condition. Liz Hopkin was airlifted to the hospital and is said to be recovering.

Official Statements and Reassurances

Carmarthenshire County Council reassured parents that the incident had been contained and that the families of the injured had been informed. Police recovered the knife from the scene and confirmed that they were not looking for any other suspects. They also warned against sharing footage of the incident on social media to avoid distressing those involved and to prevent contempt of court.

School Closure and Community Response

The school will remain closed the following day to allow for a police investigation, with pupils expected to continue their lessons online. The Association of School and College Leaders Cymru described the event as a “horrifying incident.” Director Eithne Hughes expressed deep concern and offered thoughts and prayers to everyone affected.

This tragic incident underscores the importance of vigilance and the courage of educators in ensuring the safety of their students.
