James Gunn reveals J.J. Abrams’ Black-led Superman movie is still happening

DC Studios is expanding its Superman roster with an “Elseworlds” project, as confirmed by DC Universe head James Gunn. This update sheds light on the long-anticipated Superman movie helmed by J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates, marking the first significant update in nearly a year.

Initially announced in February 2021, Abrams’ Superman film is now confirmed to be part of the DC Elseworlds series, a category known for its alternate universe and unique storytelling. Under previous leadership, multiple Superman projects were in development, including a scrapped Man of Steel 2 starring Henry Cavill. However, with Gunn and Peter Safran taking charge of DC Studios in late 2022, they opted to officially abandon Man of Steel 2 in favor of a Superman reboot.

The new Superman iteration will focus on a younger version of the character, leading to Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, with actor David Corenswet set to replace him. Notably, the film will feature a Black version of the iconic superhero, with Abrams producing and Ta-Nehisi Coates penning the screenplay.

Described as an Elseworlds tale, separate from the main DCU continuity, the project aligns with the approach taken for Matt Reeves’ Batman films. Gunn emphasized that the existence of Superman: Legacy does not preclude the consideration of other Superman stories, likening it to the standalone nature of Joker.

While no cast has been announced yet, excitement surrounds the project, with anticipation building for this fresh take on the beloved superhero. As of now, J.J. Abrams’ Elseworlds Superman film awaits a release date.
