Star Wars star John Boyega is set to produce and headline a prequel series to Denzel Washington’s “The Book of Eli.” The upcoming TV series, reported by Deadline, will feature Boyega portraying the younger version of Washington’s character, Eli, exploring the post-apocalyptic world.
The original film, released in 2010, followed Eli as he navigates a desolate world, safeguarding a crucial book containing knowledge vital for humanity’s salvation. Despite receiving mixed reviews, “The Book of Eli” achieved financial success, grossing $157.1 million worldwide against an $80 million budget.
The prequel series is slated to unfold approximately 30 years before the film’s events, offering insights into the period of the nuclear apocalypse that sets the stage for later occurrences in “The Book of Eli.” Gary Whitta, the original film’s writer and co-writer of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” serves as the creator and writer for the series. The Hughes brothers, directors of the original movie, will executive produce alongside Boyega.
Best known for his lead role in Star Wars, Boyega has also featured in recent films like “The Woman King” and “They Cloned Tyrone,” earning a Golden Globe for his performance in the TV series “Small Axe.”
As of now, “The Book of Eli” prequel series does not have a confirmed release date.
