Matthew Lillard, known for his portrayal of Shaggy in the 2002 live-action “Scooby-Doo” film and its sequel, has expressed interest in the idea of an R-rated “Scooby-Doo 3” featuring the original cast. In an exclusive interview with TooFab, Lillard discussed the potential for a more mature take on the beloved franchise, suggesting a reunion of the original cast in the iconic Mystery Machine.
The original cast includes Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred Jones, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne Blake, and Linda Cardellini as Velma Dinkley, alongside many other talented supporting stars. While a third movie never materialized, Lillard continued to voice Shaggy in various iterations, including the Warner Bros.-owned MultiVersus game, where players can control characters like Shaggy alongside other iconic figures like Batman and Bugs Bunny.
Although Shaggy isn’t typically associated with violence in traditional Scooby-Doo content, Lillard finds the idea of a more aggressive portrayal “awesome.” He even entertained the notion of an R-rated version of “Scooby-Doo,” suggesting that fan demand could make it a reality, especially with the influence of social media.
When asked about the possibility of original director James Gunn returning to helm such a project, Lillard expressed optimism, drawing parallels to the release of the Snyder Cut of “Batman.” He emphasized the strength of fan enthusiasm and suggested that it would be “super fun” to explore a darker, more adult-oriented version of the Scooby-Doo universe.
While Gunn is currently occupied with rebooting the DC side of Warner Bros. Pictures, Lillard believes that if approached, the studio would consider such a project, albeit not in the immediate future due to Gunn’s busy schedule with other franchises.
