Matthew Lillard, renowned for his portrayal of Shaggy in the live-action Scooby-Doo films, has ignited excitement among fans by expressing his openness to the idea of an R-rated Scooby-Doo 3. The actor, who has also lent his voice to Shaggy in various iterations, including the recent MultiVersus game, shared his enthusiasm for exploring a more intense and violent side of the iconic character.
In an exclusive interview, Lillard addressed the prospect of an R-rated sequel, drawing a parallel with the release of the Snyder Cut for Batman. He commented, “If you can get the Snyder Cut of Batman out, I don’t know there’s a reason why you can’t get that version [of Scooby-Doo] out.” Lillard highlighted the influential role of fandom, stating that in today’s landscape, creators pay attention to social media and fan sentiments.
While recognizing the busy schedule of James Gunn, the original director of the Scooby-Doo films and current head of the DC Universe, Lillard emphasized that if there’s enough demand from fans, an R-rated Scooby-Doo 3 with the original cast could become a reality. He termed the idea “super fun” and hinted at the potential for revisiting the beloved characters in a fresh, mature light.
