Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann has announced that The Last of Us Part 3 is officially in development, offering fans a glimpse into the future of the beloved video game franchise. Although it won’t be the studio’s next release, Druckmann expressed his commitment to crafting “one more chapter” in The Last of Us series.
During the Grounded II documentary on The Last of Us Part 2, Druckmann shared insights into the studio’s creative process and future plans. While he hasn’t outlined a specific story for Part 3, he revealed the existence of a concept for another game. This new installment will stand alone while serving as a connecting thread for all three parts of The Last of Us series.
Druckmann emphasized the privilege of working at Naughty Dog, where creative freedom is encouraged. He stated, “I’ve been thinking about, ‘Is there a concept there?’ And for now years, I haven’t been able to find that concept. But recently that’s changed.” He expressed excitement about the new concept, which promises to offer a fresh and engaging experience for players.
The Last of Us, initially released in 2013, introduced players to the post-apocalyptic journey of Joel and Ellie as they sought a cure in a ravaged America. Its sequel, released in 2020, continued to captivate audiences and garnered critical acclaim.
With over 37 million copies sold combined and numerous accolades received, The Last of Us franchise has left an indelible mark on the gaming industry. Additionally, the success of The Last of Us TV show by HBO has expanded the series’ reach to a broader audience.
While the development of The Last of Us Part 3 remains uncertain, Druckmann’s announcement has sparked anticipation among fans. However, if the project proceeds, it would likely require several years to materialize, given the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of Naughty Dog’s work.
