In a quaint village in Afghanistan, nine-year-old Zubaida Hasan lived a typical life until tragedy struck one day in 2001. While lighting her family’s gas stove, an explosion engulfed Zubaida in flames, leaving her with devastating injuries. Her facial skin fused with her chest, and one arm became fused to her body, presenting a grim prognosis from the local doctor who doubted her chances of survival.

Determined to save his daughter, Zubaida’s father embarked on a desperate quest for help. Despite the odds, he sought assistance at a US military base in Kabul, where Zubaida’s plight touched the hearts of the doctors. Making an exception, they admitted her and arranged for her transfer to the United States.

Under the care of renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Peter Grossman, Zubaida underwent a series of surgeries, enduring skin grafts from various parts of her body. Despite her tender age, Zubaida showed incredible resilience throughout the process, forging a deep bond with Dr. Grossman and his family, who welcomed her into their

home.

After twelve weeks of surgeries and rehabilitation, Zubaida not only regained her ability to speak and move but also learned English and enrolled in a local school. Within a year, her face was restored, allowing her to sing, play the guitar, and dance once more.
