Decrease in Eruption Activity
Since the eruption began on Wednesday, the Icelandic Met Office has observed a significant decrease in its power. The most activity is now concentrated on a few vents, although limited visibility due to wet and cloudy conditions makes it challenging to determine the exact number.
Lava Flow and Vent Activity
Lava flow remains most intense north of the fissure, particularly at the vent at Sýlingarfell, which opened last night. The eruption, located in southwestern Iceland, has sent glowing hot lava shooting 50 meters (164 feet) into the air. This marks the fifth eruption since December on the Reykjanes peninsula, near the capital Reykjavik.
Fissure and Evacuations
The Met Office reported that a fissure approximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles) in length has opened and appears to be growing. The eruption occurred around 12:00 local time (13:00 BST). As a precaution, the popular tourist resort Blue Lagoon spa has been evacuated.
