Medical science often turns what was once considered science fiction into reality. An incredible story of such a breakthrough has emerged from the West Bank, Palestine, involving a 12-year-old boy named Suleiman Hassan.
Suleiman was riding his bike when he was struck by a car, resulting in a catastrophic injury known as “internal decapitation.” This rare condition, accounting for only about 1% of spinal injury cases, involves the complete detachment of the skull from the spine while the skin remains intact. Typically caused by traumatic impacts, such as car accidents, internal decapitation usually results in the tearing of muscles and ligaments that hold the skull in place. Tragically, seven out of ten individuals with this injury do not survive long enough to reach the hospital.
Defying the odds, Suleiman was airlifted to Hadassah Ein Kerem’s Trauma Unit in Jerusalem, where he underwent a complex and life-saving surgical procedure. The injury left his head almost entirely detached, posing a severe threat to his life. The medical team reattached his skull to his spinal column using a combination of screws, plates, rods, and even bone grafts—a less common but necessary measure in such severe cases.
The surgery, performed by a highly skilled team, involved advanced techniques and state-of-the-art technology. One of the surgeons, who had recently completed a fellowship in Toronto, Canada, highlighted the complexity of the operation, which lasted several hours. “We fought for the boy’s life,” one surgeon remarked. “The procedure itself is very complicated and took several hours. We used new plates and fixations in the damaged area,” he added, underscoring the importance of expertise and technological advancements in the successful outcome.
Suleiman’s rehabilitation journey was arduous, beginning in early June and culminating in a remarkable announcement upon his discharge. The medical team continues to monitor his recovery, but he has already regained some movement in his neck, a testament to the efficacy of the treatment and the resilience of the young boy.
Throughout this harrowing experience, Suleiman’s father stood by his side, deeply thankful for the medical team’s efforts. He expressed his gratitude, saying, “I will thank you all my life for saving my dear only son. Bless you all. Thanks to you, he regained his life even when the odds were low and the danger was obvious. What saved him were professionalism, technology, and quick decision-making by the trauma and orthopedics team. All I can say is a big thank you.”
Suleiman Hassan’s story is a powerful reminder of how advancements in medical science can turn science fiction into reality, saving lives against seemingly insurmountable odds. This extraordinary case not only highlights the critical role of technology and expertise in modern medicine but also underscores the importance of swift, decisive action in emergency situations.
